What Is A Newborn Care Specialist, Anyway?

If you have found yourself at 2am aimlessly googling how to get your baby to sleep through the night, there is a good chance that you have heard of a Newborn Care Specialist. But you might be asking yourself, who are these professionals and how can they help my family?

Previously known as a "baby nurse" or "night nurse", a certified Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) is a trained professional that dedicates themselves to caring for your infant and supporting you as a parent.

These night nurses complete evidence-based training on basic newborn care, development, sleep training, healthy sleep patterns, managing twins and multiples, breast milk handling, and so much more. Many night nurses have had prior careers as registered nurses, lactation consultants, or labor doulas. They are truly specialists on all things related to newborns.

How Can A Newborn Care Specialist Help Me?

Ask a parent what the hardest thing about bringing home a new baby is, and they'll probably all say the same thing: sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep during those first few weeks is no joke.

In fact, there is a plethora of research that shows new parents face up to six years of sleep deprivation, decreased breast milk supply, and increased rates of postpartum depression.

Some parents lay awake anticipating their baby's cry or they may struggle to get their baby to stop crying in the wee hours of the night.

The good news is that when you hire a night nurse through Swaddled Newborn Care, you are not alone. You don't have to spend those early days or weeks just "figuring it out" on your own. Instead, you will have a partner to help support you and care for your baby while you get a good night's sleep.

What Can I Expect When I Hire A Newborn Care Specialist?

While many Newborn Care Specialist's help to support families during the day, the majority work overnight to help parents rest.

Your night nurse will arrive in the evening and care for your baby through the night. This usually involves feeding the baby or bringing the baby to mom for nursing, changing diapers, bathing, stocking the nursery, doing infant laundry, cleaning bottles, and getting the baby back to sleep. Our night nurses will help create healthy sleep patterns and routines to help your baby work towards sleeping through the night. Most importantly, they will help support you in the way that best fit's your needs and parenting philosophy.
